Flowering Trees
Tabebuia, Yellow 25g
Tabebuia, Yellow 25g Image

Tabebuia caraiba

These highly ornamental trees grow between 20 and 30 feet and make great single specimen trees for medium-sized yards as well as pretty accents in larger properties. All are deciduous – losing their leaves in winter – though during warmer winters they may shed leaves later in the season just before flowering. Tabebuias prefer a sunny location. They develop seed pods but these won’t create a nuisance by littering the ground and sprouting everywhere.

Caesalpinia pulcherrima

Dwarf poinciana is a shrubby, ornamental accent tree with multiple trunks, blooming on and off during warm months in South Florida. Not actually related to the enormous royal poinciana, the dwarf’s bloom is the national flower of Barbados, where the plant is known as “Pride of Barbados.” The butterfly-attracting flowers are brilliant red-orange (the most common color), yellow or dark pink, depending on the variety. This diminutive flowering tree can be grown as a large shrub, if you prefer, or keep the base cleaned up for a more tree-like look.

Height: up to 10-12′

Light Requirements: Full sun

Crape Myrtle 25g

Lagerstroemia indica

The crape myrtle tree gives a classic sign that summer is here as the tree bursts into bloom with huge, colorful flowers. Blooms are followed by heavy seed pods that cause the branches to weep. Branches are bare from January into April. Available in single or multiple trunk specimens, some crapes are more shrubby than others and sizes can vary greatly – from 6 feet to 25 feet tall.
