Flowering Trees
Bauhinia blakeana
Produces large (4-6″) pinkish-purplish fragrant orchid-like flowers in fall and winter. The leaves of this evergreen are easily recognized by their double lobed shape which can be associated with a heart or a butterfly. Leaves are also large in size from 3 to 4 inches with a deep cleft dividing the apex. This tree can grow from 20 to 40 feet in height and is only moderately salt tolerant but highly resistant to
drought.
Height: up to 9-11′
Light Requirements: Full sun
Lagerstroemia Speciosa
Semi-evergreen with spectacular lavender flowers during the summer. The flowers are impressively
displayed in 10-12″ long panicles. Even when not in bloom, the foliage will also attract attention with its
foot-long dark green leaves that gradually turn red in the winter. Highly drought tolerant and
moderately salt tolerant. Can reach to 40-50 feet in height with almost equally large spread.
Lagerstroemia indica
The crape myrtle tree gives a classic sign that summer is here as the tree bursts into bloom with huge, colorful flowers. Blooms are followed by heavy seed pods that cause the branches to weep. Branches are bare from January into April. Available in single or multiple trunk specimens, some crapes are more shrubby than others and sizes can vary greatly – from 6 feet to 25 feet tall.
Height: up to 6-7′
Light Requirements: Full sun
Capparis cynophallophora
Large shrub or small (12′) tree with fragrant blooms in spring and summer that change color from different hues of white to pink and attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Medium salt tolerance. Does
not tolerate long term flooding nor nutrient poor soils. Drought tolerant and should not require additional irrigation once established.

Fificium decipiens
The Japanese Fern Tree has a naturally rounded crown. It’s neither Japanese in origin nor a fern – though the long thin leaves growing out from stems have a fern-like look. This small shade tree is evergreen and prefers full to part sun. It can get 20 to 25 feet but that takes quite a while, since it’s is a slow to moderate grower.
